Resort adviser defends process
AN environmental scientist has hit back at claims that much of KUR-World would ravage sensitive parts of the rainforest near Kuranda.
James Cook University rainforest researcher Professor Bill Laurance, in the Cairns Post yesterday, claimed the development would have serious negative environmental impacts upon the region if the $650 million project went ahead.
The environmental impact statement (EIS) for KURWorld is expected to be released for public comment before the end of the year.
Environmental consultant Neil Boland, whose NRA Environmental Approval and Compliance Solutions has been contracted by Macau-based developers Reever and Ocean Developments, said the proponent was adhering to a statutory process, the outcome of which would not be known until it was completed.
“There are over 30 studies under way in relation to the KUR-World project, the results of which are informative,” he said. “For example, regarding connectivity, site-specific data demonstrates there is no evidence to support Bill’s assertion suggesting that the development would ‘slam the door’ on any gene flow between the two remaining northern bettong populations.
“Field surveys undertaken by appropriately qualified and experienced ecologists have determined that the prime habitat for the species does not occur on the project site.
“Potential sub-optimal habitat does exist on the project site. This habitat area has been included in the area of remnant vegetation to be managed as an environmental area.”
He said land at the proposed development site, comprised of remnant and nonremnant vegetation that linked the northern and southern sections of the World Heritage area, would be preserved as part of the project.
“Mechanisms to manage this area to improve habitat values are being investigated,” he said. KUR-World is to include a luxury five-star 200room resort, an 18-hole golf course, retail and dining outlets among other attractions.
