Dream trip for science By Emily Quirke, Year 12, Woree State High School

-

SIXTEEN lucky Year 11 and 12 physics students from Woree State High School, along with two supervising teachers Jemma Stevens and Bradley Wright, embarked on a trip of a lifetime from July 27-29.

Students flew down to Brisbane to visit science museums and Queensland University of Technology and take part in the most anticipated activity of the trip — a day a t Dreamworld to study multiple physics concepts and phenomena.

Despite a delayed flight on our first day, we made every minute count once we landed, checking into our hotel then doing a bit of sightseeing before the work began.

A visit to the Brisbane Eye on our first night allowed us to truly see the city and experience the diverse foods and cultures.

On our second day students caught the train to the Gold Coast finally arriving at Dreamworld and prepared for the work to begin.

Contrary to popular belief, we didn’t go there just for fun but spent more than three quarters of the day at Dreamworld making calculations and measuring the 3D acceleration on some of the rides such as the rollercoaster and Tower of Terror.

The data and calculations collected from the rides were essential for our studies and our term three assignment as we are currently studying the physics of amusement parks.

The trip to Dreamworld enabled us to get an understanding of how the concepts we learn in class are applied to the real world around us.

We also visited the Science Centre at the Queensland Museum and the Gallery of Modern Art.

Students participated in a range of interactive science activities at the Cube at QUT which gave us a view of life after high school.

This trip was one we will never forget and we are especially thankful to our physics teacher Miss Stevens for making our Dreamworld excursion a reality.
