Workout on the run

- DANAELLA WIVELL

Running ... it’s the easiest exercise to throw yourself into while exploring the beauty of FNQ. All you need is some energy and a place to run and in Cairns places to run are in abundance. The Cairns Post asks some regular runners about their favourite routes and what motivates them to pound the pavement.

FOR all intents and purposes running seems to be the easiest exercise to throw yourself into while exploring the beauty of Cairns.

All you need is some energy and a place to run and in Cairns places to run are abundant.

Bentley Park runner Hamish Yoshida said his passion for running was coupled with his enthusiasm for scenery.

“I think the Esplanade is probably the nicest spot in town to have a nice easy run,” he said. “The arrows are also great and if you live on the north end of town Earl Hill is also great for running up.

“My favourite arrow is usually the Red Arrow. It’s great hill training.

“Scenery is important when I’m going for a run. It’s nice to look out at the ocean or be in the forest, it's a bit more interesting than just pounding the pavement on the roads and competing with cars.”

He said getting started with running around Cairns 10 years ago led him to taking part in some of the races in the region, which allowed him to explore new terrain.

“On the weekend I did the Great Pyramid Race, which I enjoyed. It was a hot day though,” he said.

“It was important to slow down and check how I was feeling and make sure I finished the race.”

Running Heroes managing director Sam Canavan said running was an important release for almost anyone who laced up their shoes.

“Everyone has their different reasons for training,”he said. “Some people just get out there and pound the pavements. For other people, it’s important to have all the right equipment before they begin and looking the part is an important motivator for them.

“It doesn’t matter what gets you moving, but as long as you are, that’s the most important factor.”
