MUSIC festivals normally involve getting your groove on with the help of a drink or two.

But a new kind of music festival is ready to take over Cairns as the power of good music and good-for-you behaviours join forces for Yoga Dreaming.

The collaboration between DJ Reuben Rusch and Ella Shannon is planned for Lake Tinaroo’s Genazzano Retreat and will combine gentle yoga with electro music in a first for the region.

“I’m a yoga and tantra teacher outside of my day job and I go away on retreats a few times a year,” Ms Shannon said.

“Yoga retreats usually cost thousands of dollars so I wanted to make something really accessible for Cairns.”

The two-day retreat, on October 7-8 at Yungaburra, will start with vegetarian meals catered by Param Events, followed by yoga practice, a template ceremony and meditation.

Then, as the night goes on, the energies collected during yoga and meditation will find a place to let loose with a conscious dance party featur- ing electro-didgeridoo artist Ganga Giri.

“We really wanted to use the energy from yoga, which can be quite ecstatic,” Ms Shannon said. “It’s an easy way to get high with other people without drinking and drugs.”

Mr Rusch said the retreat would give participants an opportunity to get closer to musicians.

“With most electronic festivals there are thousands of people there with you, but there will only be 80 at this retreat,” he said.

“It will give people a closeknit feeling with the musicians, and even cultural connections through Ganga Giri who uses didgeridoo in his music. It’s perfect for a retreat.

“The music is going to add even more good vibes on top of the yoga itself.”
