Warning to public with man on run
A FAR Northern man wanted for multiple property offences who has been on the run for more than a month may be armed and high on drugs behind the wheel of a car.
Police have been hunting Rangi Fyfe, 20, for about six weeks over a series of car thefts and break-ins.
He has managed to escape the clutches of officers at Wonga Beach, Caravonica, Ellis Beach and Kuranda at various stages in recent weeks, despite police using a helicopter and their elite Special Emergency Response Team to try and catch him.
Senior Constable Russell Parker said he may be acting in “desperation” and has urged people to report any sightings but not to approach him.
“There is a possibility (he’s armed), but we can’t confirm it,” Sen-Constable Parker said.
“We are very concerned about a level of desperation and it appears he’s not going to stop for anybody.
“We do fear that it’s only a matter of time before an innocent member of the public will be injured or worse because of his driving behaviour.”
Mr Fyfe was last seen fleeing into bushland after running from a car on the Kennedy Highway just outside Kuranda on Tuesday night.
The silver Toyota LandCruiser he was driving, which was allegedly stolen from Wonga Beach, has been seized by police who found drug utensils inside.
It is alleged he also stole a caravan from Mowbray and sideswiped a police car near Ellis Beach late last month.
Sen-Constable Parker said Mr Fyfe had a number of associates in the area who may be harbouring him.
“We would urge those people to think about what they’re doing. This is a man who clearly needs to be taken into custody,”
Anyone sighting him or with information is urged to call 000.
