Cutting it as premiership contenders

- JORDAN GERRANS

AFL AFTER years of being in the shadows of Manunda and North Cairns, an emerging South Cairns are ready to break out in the AFL Cairns Womens 2017 finals series.

The Cutters girls last won a premiership in the 2009-10 season, when the competition was played over summer, and will start as favourites tomorrow afternoon as they face the Tigers in the preliminary final at Cazalys Stadium.

With the defending and minor premiers Hawks sitting pretty in the grand final already, the winner of the Cutters and Tigers battle will advance to the final day of the season.

Cutters president Michael Douglas, who coached the club to their last flag, believes a nice blend of youth and experience helped them towards second spot on the ladder this season.

“We have had some juniors come into the side as well as a few older girls from the glory days of 2008, ’09 and ’10 seasons,” Douglas said.

“They have provided real direction for the younger girls.

“The biggest problem over the last few years is getting everyone to training but the coach, Troy Munro, has done a great job this year.

“He has put the club in with a chance to contend for a premiership.”

The Cutters have three wins to one against North this season.

The Fretwell Park-based club will tomorrow welcome back rising star Kitara Farrar, who last week represented the Allies in their AFLW Under 18 State of Origin match against Victoria at Etihad Stadium.

“She is one to watch for the future,” Douglas said.
