FAMILY blockbusters will be among the first flicks shown as Cairns’ newest cinema complex starts welcoming moviegoers from today.

Event Cinemas Smithfield has opened just in time for the September school holidays.

With the largest Vmax screen north of Brisbane, the cutting-edge new facility is ex- pecting strong crowds over coming weeks.

“We are so proud of our new staff that have come from the area to work with us in this launch phase and hopefully for years to come,” said general manager Lee Staddon.

“There’s a real buzz among the team that has been working so hard in ensuring that the cinema is looking its best and ready to go, so we can provide a great first impression to our visitors.” The six-cinema complex will be able to accommodate about 1300 guests in total at any one time.

The flagship Vmax theatre, with 374 seats, is the only Cairns cinema to feature the highly sought-after Dolby Atmos technology.

From now until October 23, Event Cinemas Smithfield is offering $14 standard tickets to members of the company’s Cinebuzz loyalty program.

Movies being screened from today include The Emoji Movie, American Assassin, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie and more.

A VIP night is being held on September 20 for the launch of Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

The new Northern Beaches cinema is to complement the dining and entertaining precinct taking shape at Smithfield Shopping Centre.
