Fears for homes as fires rage in Trinity

- DANAELLA WIVELL

RESIDENTS are fearing for their homes as fires are expected to continue burning through East Trinity until the end of the week.

George Mansford said his home, about 500m off Yarrabah Rd, was dangerously close to the burning bush.

“The fires are at my back door,” he said.

“The volunteer firefighters are here trying to do burnbacks.”

He said it wasn’t the first time fires had threatened his property.

“I’ve been on planet Earth for a while now and I’ve lived here for quite a few years, so I’m confident we can fight the fires. In the worst-case scenario we have insurance, so we’ll just have to deal with what happens next,” he said.

Rural firefighting and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service crews responded at 1.40pm yesterday to a large bushfire burning on Pine Creek Yarrabah Rd.

There were also fires burning at Bessie St and Kingfisher St.

Mr Mansford said times like these really showed East Trinity’s community spirit.

“No matter how despondent people are with the nature of the nation, we all band together to help each other out,” he said.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services left the scene in the hands of the Department of National Parks overnight and will return this morning to monitor the fire’s progress.
