I’ve had to reassess where I’m at: Trengove

- JESPER FJELDSTAD

AFL POWER utility Jackson Trengove has conceded he may not be at Alberton next year and will have a clearer picture after a meeting scheduled with Ken Hinkley this week.

Trengove, 26, is a restricted free agent after eight seasons on Port Adelaide’s list and has attracted interest from clubs in Victoria.

And while he was one of the leaders at the club during its lean times before Hinkley arrived, he was on the outer for the last three matches of the home-and-away season – dropped after the big loss to the Crows in Round 20 – and wasn’t selected in the elimination final loss to West Coast.

A wide range of commentators suggested the club had made a horror call in leaving him out, considering the job he did as a defensive forward on Richmond’s Alex Rance may have been replicated against the Eagles’ Jeremy McGovern, who was dominant in the elimination final.

Trengove expected to have a frank conversation with Hinkley and said there was still a chance he would stay.

But he also said the past few weeks had led him to think deeply about his situation.

“Over the past four weeks I’ve had to reassess where I’m at at this football club,” Trengove said.

“I think I’ve got a lot of AFL footy in me – body’s fantastic.

“I’ve got to have that honest conversation with the footy club about where they actually see me, if I fit in their picture.

“If I don’t, I definitely have to look elsewhere.”

Trengove said it had taken some time to come to terms with the prospect of not being at Port Adelaide. The 197cm, 97kg utility has been with the Power since he was taken at No.22 in the 2008 draft.
