BURSTING THROUGH

- British India struggled a bit to make their latest album … but they’ve survived in best of style DANAELLA WIVELL

IT’S tough getting through your first bout of writer’s block, but British India has pushed through to produce their new album

Bassist Will Drummond says it was the first time the band had ever struggled to pull together a cohesive record on the first go.

“We moved to new studios in South Yarra, which are a lot more deluxe than what we’re used to, and we were writing lots but ... we just had a kind of writer’s block,” he says.

He says after finding the first producer the album started coming together.

“It’s tough knowing when you’re happy with an album. When you first write the song you’re like ‘I love, love, love it’ but then after a bit you’ll think it’s crap, and then you’ll like it again,” he says.

“But you know when you’re really happy with it when it’s out there and people are listening to it.”

Drummond says he will know just how much he likes the album when it comes out at the end of next week.

“This is the longest we’ve ever sat on an album between recording it and releasing it,” he says.

“We’re going to put at least six of our new songs on the set list for our tour.

“When it comes to new songs, you can play them and rehearse them all week, but the moment you step on stage with a live audience in front of you it’s like 1000 times more intense than rehearsal. It makes you more self-critical.”

Drummond says he will be staying in Cairns for about a week to celebrate his birthday after British India plays at The Grass Is Greener on Saturday, October 14. www.newhorizonsvillascairns.com.au
