Assault on police
CAIRNS police arrested three people following the serious assault of a female officer at the Grand Hotel. Cairns police District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant James Coate said police had been responding to reports of a domestic disturbance just before 6pm last night when the attack allegedly occurred immediately on their arrival. Snr Sgt Coate said the female officer was allegedly punched in the head multiple times by a number of people. “She’s receiving treatment at the Cairns Hospital,” he said. Investigations into the incident continue and no charges had been laid last night.
Family fun in park
FUN and free activities will make up Child Protection Week’s family fun day tomorrow from 9.3011.30am at Ravizza Park in Edmonton. There will be games, face painting, a jumping castle, information stalls, entertainment, an animal petting zoo and more. Child Protection Week aims to promote the value of children and focus attention on child abuse and neglect. In case of wet weather the event will be moved to the Edmonton Leisure Centre on Walker Rd.
Waking up to Cairns
CAIRNS will play host to the Today team this morning as Karl Stefanovic takes on the ultimate dare — bungy jumping in the rainforest canopy. Jet skiing with crocodiles and cane toad races all make-up the Far North Queensland fun as part of the show’s new We Love Australia adventure.
Motorcyclist injured
A MOTORCYCLIST was taken to Mossman Hospital on Saturday with minor leg injuries after colliding with a car on Port Douglas Rd. Emergency services were called to the incident involving the 69-year-old man about 9.20am.
Wildlife workshop
THREATENED species recovery teams from across the Wet Tropics will gather today to devise ways to save at-risk animals and ecological communities. The workshop at Paradise Palms is hosted by Terrain NRM and Wet Tropics Management Authority.
