First the conference, then reel deal

KEEN angler Brendan Moore has his eye on the “iconic” barramundi.

“It’s always at the top of every fisherman’s list,” he said.

Mr Moore is visiting Cairns as part of the Australian National Sportfishi­ng Associatio­n’s 50th birthday and annual conference.

In 1967 a bunch of passionate anglers pioneered fishing Watch video from the event www.cairnspost.com.au for fun. This week-long event included a visit to the club’s first meeting spot at Yorkeys Knob hall.

Yesterday there was also an open expo at the Tanks Arts Centre.

“This allowed people to come in and get a briefing on what clubs do and get high level informatio­n on fishing, rods, photograph­y,” Mr Moore said.

ANSA clubs from across the state attended as well as delegates from NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Meet-andgreets and an open expo were just the beginning with the real fun kicking off today as these visiting fisherman wet lines in Far North Queensland waters.

“Some of us are going up to Copperlode Dam, some are heading to the net-free zone at Trinity Inlet,” Mr Moore said.

This would be followed by four days of fishing in the Hinchinbro­ok Channel at Cardwell.

“Fishing is one of the few pursuits that keeps you totally in touch with the environmen­t and I think that’s what we enjoy most,” he said.
