Expedition promises reel action off Cardwell

A FOUR-day fishing expedition in waters off Cardwell will start today after anglers wet a line at Trinity Inlet and Copperlode Dam.

The Cairns Sportfishing Competition yesterday saw about 20 anglers wrap up the Australian National Sportfishing Association’s 50th birthday celebrations and annual conference.

ANSA Queensland vicepresident Adam Royle said it was a “bit quiet” for fishermen.

“Most of the fish were fairly small,” he said.

“It was a good sign for the estuary. It might be signs that the population is starting to bounce back with a lot of juveniles.”

The catch and release competition wrapped up about 2pm before the visiting anglers headed south for Cardwell.

Barramundi, mangrove jack and grunter were some of the catches reeled in.

ANSA clubs from across the state had attended the conference and public expo over the weekend.

Anglers who are part of the fishing expedition can tag fish as part of the Hinchinbrook Sportfishing Club Recreational Fishery Monitoring Plan.

ANSA Qld president Nathan Johnston said the organisation used the 50-year milestone to reassess fishing opportunities.

“Our objective is to enrich and deepen angler experiences, offer something for every walk of life and give members opportunity to connect, learn and exchange ideas,” he said.

A plaque will be unveiled at Cardwell for ANSA founding member Vic McCristal.
