THE Taipans playing group has spoken and will retain Cameron Gliddon and Stephen Weigh as their leadership combination again for the upcoming NBL season.

Gliddon, with the Snakes since early 2012, is now entering his fourth season as the club’s captain while Weigh will be his vice-captain for the second season running.

And, after the pair led the Snakes to second place on the ladder after the regular season last campaign, they have established a foundation the playing group wants to build from.

The Taipans decide their leadership structure via a player vote with the squad electing to keep the duo as their leaders for the 2017-18 NBL season.

During the voting process, players select a captain and vice-captain as well as rating their selections in their ability to lead in certain aspects and areas, with Gliddon and Weigh again voted to lead the club.

Speaking after training at the Fish Tank yesterday morning, Weigh and Gliddon both agreed they had different styles of leadership, which complemented each other as leaders and the entire squad.

Weigh described Gliddon as an “emotional leader” while he aims to “hold everyone to account, day in and day out,” on the team’s values.

The 30-year-old Weigh said the pair may have “rested on their laurels” during last season and wanted to bring a more personal approach to the leadership role this summer.

“We have got to make sure we know what makes the new guys tick,” Weigh said.

“It is our job as leaders to cover that and learn that about each player in the team.

“It is such a rushed and intense season at times and often you may just forget because you are trying to cover so many things.

“Now that we have had the opportunity to sit back and reflect on last season, there are areas we need to improve on and it is good we have highlighted those so we can improve.

“We are always trying to find ways to help this group improve, getting to know players on an individual level, just little things like how they are feeling in the group and we need to do that with the new guys in particular.”

The 28-year-old Gliddon is now the longest-serving consecutive season skipper of the club as Anthony Stewart served as captain for five seasons over a seven-year period.

“Stephen and I definitely have different ways of going about it, he sees things I do not see at times and vice versa,” Gliddon said.

“I think it is a good partnership we have going on and we are really excited for the new season.

“I just try and be genuine with what I say and do.”
