Savvy new Reef aid group
THE hundreds of workers who rely on the Great Barrier Reef for a living are taking control of their future.
Staff of 12 Reef operators have formed Divers for Reef Conservation to boost efforts to protect the incredible natural wonderland.
They include divers, skippers, cruise attendants, marine biologists and other workers.
Their roles will include clean-up activities, the reduction and prevention of marine pollution and other threats to the marine environment.
They will focus on plastics, carbon and even sunscreen pollution.
These are people who travel to the Reef far and wide every day.
They are passionate about their jobs and the Reef and are very aware how important that the beauty of their saltwater environment remains pristine.
Daily they see various examples of pollution and, no matter how small, can quickly act.
Even just picking up a floating plastic bag can make a huge difference.
Divers for Reef Conservation can be the daily guardians on watch, reporting more serious issues to their bosses and/or authorities so action can be taken decisively.
They will complement the work of the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators, representing owners and operators.
Their work can be extended to their guests, passengers and customers, who can be a part of the conservation work too, more than just spectators and making a difference.
Divers for Reef Conservation are to be commended for their initiative, making sure the Reef is looked after for future generations. Nick Dalton Deputy editor
