ID proposal to cut queues

LNP plan wins club support

NIGHTCLUB managers in Cairns are championing the LNP’s proposal to push the mandatory ID scanning time from 10pm to midnight.

The State Opposition says, if elected, it will remove a twohour “loophole”, which meant clubs open until midnight didn’t have to scan IDs while clubs open past midnight had to begin scanning IDs at 10pm.

Woolshed managing director Dominic Davies said the popular Cairns nightclub had always supported ID scanning.

But he said that a change of mandatory scanning times would ease congestion when big groups arrived about 10.30pm.

“I think it will smooth out the big queues earlier in the night,” he said.

He said The Woolshed had been using scanners for almost 10 years to keep troublemakers out of the venue.

“Scanners have the potential to revolutionise behaviour similar to how breathalysers did,” he said.

“We’ve been using them for eight years so it’s been pretty smooth for our venue.

“They’re keeping our guests safe.”

Barron River LNP candidate Michael Trout said closing the two-hour gap was essential to keep Cairns’ Safe Night Precinct a safe and inviting place for residents and visitors.

“You certainly have to have everything standardised,” he said.

“The problem now is people are confused,” Mr Trout said.

“Most international guests that come from all over the world have never had to scan their ID to go into a club to listen to music and have a few beers.

“What we want to see is it standardised right across all the pubs and clubs in Queensland and we will implement midnight for mandatory scanning.”
