Alleged thief on assault charges

A CAIRNS man who allegedly assaulted two staff members from a Bungalow restaurant after stealing alcohol from the business will face court later this year.

It is alleged the 21-year-old Westcourt man entered the Mulgrave Rd restaurant on Thursday about 5.20pm and stole the booze.

A 50-year-old male employee attempted to retrieve the alcohol from a nearby residence where he was allegedly headbutted by the man.

He needed stitches for a laceration to the head.

A second employee, a 28year-old man also suffered a minor hand and leg injury after bottles were allegedly thrown at him as he attempted to stop the man.

Police will also allege that the man had earlier entered another Mulgrave Rd store nearby armed with a broken glass bottle.

He allegedly threatened staff and demanded cigarettes before throwing the bottle at the staff member and fleeing. The employee was not injured.

Police went to Dalton St a short time later and saw a group fighting, including some of the victims from the restaurant.

The alleged offender ran from police and they gave chase and took him into custody on Brophy St.

The man was charged with entering a premises with intent, attempted robbery, entering a premises and committing an indictable offence and two counts of assault occasionin­g bodily harm.

The matter will be heard in court on November 29.
