Fiancee hoping ‘fearless’ man is still safe

- THOMAS CHAMBERLIN

THE fiancee of a man missing after a trawler capsized off central Queensland says he is fearless and hopes he is “kicked back on one of the islands with a coconut in hand”.

Ana James, partner of Eli Tonks, said he was “full of love, compassion and emotion, and is one of the strongest, most kind-hearted people”.

The search for Mr Tonks and five of his crewmates continues after the fishing boat Dianne overturned near Middle Island, northeast of Gladstone, on Monday about 7.30pm.

Ms James said Mr Tonks was a “machine”.

“Friends and family know he would not give up without a fight,” she said.

“Most of us continue to hold on to hope that he’s kicked back on one of the islands with a coconut in hand, because that’s the kind of guy he is. Fearless and capable of anything.”

Mr Tonks’ family yesterday said they “have not given up hope, and will not give up until they are found” .

“Eli is a beloved partner, son, brother, friend and loving father of two,” they said. Ruben McDornan, who was rescued after he survived 12 hours in heavy seas, was yesterday reunited with his wife.

He has helped police in the search operation and a statement was yesterday issued on his behalf, thanking the community.

“Ruben is very distressed regarding this incident and is concerned for the welfare of his friends who remain missing, and their families,” the statement said. Follow the latest on
