Big national firm puts down Cairns roots

- HAYDEN SMITH hayden.smith@news.com.au

A NATIONAL law firm has expanded to Cairns with the tropical city’s growing connectivity to China proving one of several drawcards.

Holding Redlich has signed a three-year lease for an office on the 15th floor of the city’s tallest building, the Cairns Corporate Tower on Lake St.

Specialising in corporate and commercial law, the firm’s other offices are in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Holding Redlich partner Paul Venus (pictured right) said numerous factors were behind the company’s Far North expansion.

“We’ve got a bunch of clients in and around Cairns, so we’ve been spending an increasing amount of time in the area,” he said.

“Cairns has also got a vibe about it … there’s a level of optimism in the city and a real entrepreneurial spirit.

“If we were going to expand anywhere, Cairns seemed to be the most sensible place.

“Some of our Chinese clients are showing more interest in Cairns and we want to be better placed to service them.”

Queensland Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt will officially open the new Holding Redlich office this morning.

The “key practice areas” will include agribusiness, property and real estate, construction and infrastructure, native title, workplace relations and safety, and local government.

Mr Venus said Holding Redlich was recruiting local lawyers and support staff for the Cairns office.

“We see Cairns as a city with a lot of potential,” Mr Venus said.

“There is a lot going on throughout the Far North.

“We expect that when we get to the end of our three-year lease, we might need to take out a bigger lease – we don’t do things in the short term.”
