Gutsy Terriers fight off Man U
AARON Mooy starred on the big stage yet again, scoring his second goal of the EPL season as Huddersfield Town shocked Manchester United 2-1.
The Socceroos midfielder scored the opener for Huddersfield as they upset the Premier League giants for the first time in 65 years at The John Smith’s Stadium yesterday.
While United dominated possession throughout the first half it was Huddersfield who broke the game open in the 28th minute, when Mooy pounced. The 27-year-old Australian dispossessed Juan Mata in central midfield and then played Tom Ince in behind the United defence.
Ince beat several United defenders before being stopped by a reflex save from David de Gea, but the ball spilt to Mooy who thundered the rebound home with his left foot from around the penalty spot, to make it 1-0.
Five minutes later the Terriers sent their home fans into a frenzy when Belgian striker Laurent Depoitre took advantage of a shocking defensive mistake by Victor Lindelof.
Lindelof, who had come on 10 minutes earlier for the injured Phil Jones, missed a header as Depoitre ran onto the loose ball and rounded de Gea to score the easiest of goals for 2-0.
United manager Jose Mourinho rang the changes at halftime, brining on big guns Henrikh Mikhitaryan and Marcus Rashford for Mata and Anthony Martial.
Still United couldn’t break the Terriers, and did not get a shot on target until the 75th minute when Jonas Lossl made a save to deny Ander Herrera.
On 77 minutes the dam wall broke and it was Rashford who found the net. When unchallenged at the back post he headed home a Romelu Lukaku cross to make it 2-1.
From there United continued to lay siege to the Huddersfield goal but they simply could not find a way past the desperate Terriers defence.
Huddersfield manager David Wagner lauded his players.
“This win was not only luck; it was a deserved result,” he said.
“We sat deeper and attacked on the transition. It’s a big, big day.”
