Hellraiser’s promise: I’m coming for Horn’s title
BOXING JEFF Horn has a blister on his hand from laying turf in his Acacia Ridge backyard and British slugger Gary Corcoran promises to put callouses on the world champ’s chin when they fight on December 13 at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
“Hellraiser” Corcoran has vowed an all-out war when he challenges Horn for the World Boxing Organisation welterweight title and said he had summoned some of Britain’s best boxers as sparring partners.
He promises to upset Horn in the same way Horn upset Manny Pacquiao to win the world title at Suncorp Stadium on July 2.
“Horn is a tough come-forward fighter like me so it’s going to be a very tough, physical fight and I believe I can beat him at that game,’’ said Corcoran.
Corcoran has 17 wins in 18 fights and has never lost at the 66kg welterweight division.
“It will be an exciting fight, the two of us coming together, throwing punches,” he said.
Corcoran, 26, said he had been sparring former world champs Kell Brook and David Avanesyan as well as ComMIN monwealth Games gold medallist Frankie Gavin and has mixed it up with the bigger (79kg) British light-heavyweight champ Frank Buglioni.
Meanwhile Toowoomba’s Kris George continues to march towards a showdown with Horn, retaining his Commonwealth welterweight title yesterday with a sixth-round stoppage over Jack Brubaker.
George won on a cut eye. He took the Commonwealth title last year with an upset decision over Horn’s Olympic teammate and training partner Cameron Hammond.
On the undercard yesterday, Tim Tszyu climbed off the canvas in Round 1 to win a 10-round decision over Gunnedah lightmiddleweight Wade Ryan.
In Melbourne on Saturday, world No.6 super-flyweight Andrew Moloney scored a fourth-round knockout over Tanzania’s Hashimu Zuberi to become the first Australian boxer to win a Commonwealth Games gold and a pro Commonwealth boxing title.
