Teenage golfer has one eye on Masters

- RUSSELL GOULD

Woo Lee knows he has to put Augusta out of his mind this week.

But the big-hitting 19-yearold from Western Australia also knows how hard that will be given the massive carrot for victory in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in New Zealand is a start at the Masters.

The Masters trophy will be there for everyone to see and new Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley will on hand too, just reminding all 120 would-be winners of the prize on offer.

But Lee, the brother of women’s world number 19 Minjee, said there’s only one scenario where he would even consider thinking about Augusta as he battles against the best amateurs from Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

“Hopefully if I do it’s because I have got a big lead. How good would that be,” Lee, who outdrove Aussie star Jason Day at Nike event in April, told the Herald Sun.

“But you don’t want it to get to you. You just have to do what you have been doing for however many years you have been playing, however many tournaments you have been playing.

“I haven’t been in a position when there is a reward like a spot in the Masters on the line. But I have been in that winning position, and maybe I have thought about it too much. I’ve got to let it happen.”

Lee is part of a six-strong Aussie team, all hoping to emulate last year’s winner, West Australian Curtis Luck who was one of only two amateurs to make the cut at Augusta earlier this year as he played out his prize. Australia’s history in the event is strong with Luck winning last year.
