Combat cancer

FAR North Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers are set to benefit from a new two-day program, launched to help combat cancer survival disparitie­s among indigenous communitie­s. Initiated by Cancer Council Queensland, Caring for Our Community aims to enhance the role, knowledge and practice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers in cancer care, prevention, screening, early detection and end of life care. Workshops will be held throughout the state until April 2018.

Men’s shed funding

The Yarrabah Men’s Shed has received an early Christmas present, with $8400 in funding from the Federal Government. Northern based LNP Senator Ian Macdonald said the funding would be used to provide specialise­d tools and equipment in order to expand activities, and an upgrade to their facility to improve health and safety. The grant funding is part of the $5.1 million the Federal Government has provided to the Australian Men’s Shed Associatio­n through to 2018-19.

Group launch

THE newly-formed Manunda Neighbourh­ood Watch group will be officially launched tomorrow at 6.30pm in Somerset Room at Cairns Colonial Club in Cannon St. The meeting will be an opportunit­y to voice concerns about community safety. Tea and coffee will be available at the event.
