Gathering for whole of school

By Serina Reimann, Year 7, Bentley Park College

-

WE held a NAIDOC family gathering at Bentley Park recently, which included all students from Prep to Year 12 for the first time.

In the spirit of the theme, Language Matters, we had many events and indigenous services come to the celebration.

All students, staff, parents, carers and special guests gathered near our P-6 Sports Hall.

At the opening of our NAIDOC celebration, Neville Reys delivered our Welcome to Country.

We had student MCs in place near stage to host the ceremony including Wollie Gela, Chevonne Griffin, Chanel Singleton, Joyce DouglasWallis and myself.

Everyone involved got a wrist band or badge so they could be recognised if anyone needed help or wanted to ask questions.

There was cultural food being sold for our Indigenous Leaders of the Future (ILF) program. Profits will go towards our ILF shirts, camp and other events we have planned for the future.

One of our special guests was Councillor John Schilling, who enjoyed all the decorations and local performers.

Merindi Briscoe sang language songs and the P-6 Choir sang songs too.

NAIDOC this year was a blast, since it’s my first year at Bentley Park College.

I’d be glad to be a part of another celebration like this. Our 2017 Bentley Park College NAIDOC Week gathering will never be forgotten and on behalf of the indigenous leaders of the future and indigenous leaders of tomorrow, I thank parents, carers, services, guests and volunteers for coming to our celebration and I will hopefully see you at our next event.
