Homegrown talents rise up in diverse fields

SOUTH Cairns Cutters backman Damien Dewis returned to the NTFL on Saturday afternoon as his club, Pint, knocked over Waratah.

Dewis is one of several Cutters to have skipped over to Darwin in the past year. He was named in Pint’s best players in the 8.6-54 – 3.10-28 win.

His teammate at the Cutters, Zac Ewer, also featured for the club recently.

In the NTFL premier league, Manunda’s Ezekiel Frank could not kick Palmerston to victory as they fell to Waratah by 27 points.

■ AUSTRALIAN rookie Ben Simmons scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Philadelph­ia’s 102-92 loss to Boston Celtics.

The Celtics also got 10 points and eight rebounds from Australian and Mareeba big man Aron Baynes in just 13 minutes on the floor.

■ FAR North junior footballer Allanah Phiniesa took out North Queensland Under-17 MVP at the 2017 AFL Queensland Under 17 Youth Girls State Championsh­ips in Brisbane this week. Representa­tive teams from Brisbane South, Brisbane North, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Northern Rivers, North Queensland, Central Queensland, Darling Downs and PNG competed at the carnival.

North Queensland won one of their four games, knocking over Brisbane North.

Phiniesa is from Badu Island and does not play regular footy but impressed against girls who play club footy all year round.

■ FORMER Cairns Taipan Matthew Adekponya’s documentar­y RISE, on basketball in Papua New Guinea, has been released.

The movie is described as a true story about 12 PNG basketball players and their quest to win gold at the 2017 FIBA Melanesia Basketball Cup.
