Theft of crash aid man’s ute sets a low

- ANDREA FALVO

AN Edmonton man who stopped to help at a crash at Bentley Park has been left stranded after his vehicle was stolen from the roadside.

The 37-year-old was driving southbound on the Bruce Highway just before 6pm on Monday night when he saw a vehicle crash at the intersection of Robert Rd and the Bruce Highway.

While he was talking to one of the drivers, he saw a man get out of one of the cars involved in the crash, walk across the highway and get into his vehicle and drive off.

Senior Constable Daniel Whitling said the stolen red Holden Colorado had not yet been found.

Sen-Constable Whitling said it had hit a new low in vehicle thefts.

“For an act of goodwill to be rewarded with such an act is just disgusting,” he said.

“It’s the first case that I’ve come across that someone’s parked their vehicle to render assistance to people involved in a crash and had their vehicle stolen.

“I hope (it’s not a sign of the times) but quite possibly, yes.

“I can only imagine how he feels and the community feels when they hear such stories for an act of goodwill to be rewarded like this. It’s just not on.

“The message again is that we need to lock our vehicles and, unfortunately, for people even committing good acts.”

Sen-Constable Whitling encouraged motorists with dash cam footage of the incident to contact Edmonton police on 4045 9111 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
