Gift lets shelter expand
A NEW kennel at the Young Animal Protection Society will be named after the woman who donated the funds for its construction and her dog.
Woree’s Janice Hall donated $40,000 of her life savings to the no-kill animal shelter last week.
YAPS president Margaret Cochrane said she already had plans in place for the generous donation.
“It’s enough money to build a kennel,” she said.
“We’ve been going through our kennels and rebuilding them. We’ve already done five, so now we’ll build another kennel.
“We’re going to call it the Janice Hall and Stitches Kennel.”
She said nobody at YAPS was aware the donation was coming.
“It was completely unex- pected. We just don’t get these kinds of donations from the general community. We’re extremely grateful for the donation from Janice,” she said.
So far, YAPS has spent about $200,000 on rebuilding and refurbishing its kennels with its development fund and government grants.
“At least half of that was out of our development fund,” Ms Cochrane said.
“With this one we will try to get a little more funding to do the kennel beside it so we can do both kennels at the same time.”
Ms Hall said she wasn’t keen on having her name put on the kennel because she wanted “every cent to go straight to the dogs”.
“I don’t want a plaque or a sign because that will cost too much,” she said.
“I just want a better life for these dogs. I think this donation is the best thing I’ve done in my entire life.”
