Cattle rates remaining strong

- BEC SINGH

THE values of cattle remained strong for another week at the Mareeba cattle sale as the head of beasts penned increased to 531.

Local trade heifers sold well to a top of 252c/kg, which was an increase on last week’s sale.

Bulls suitable for slaughter improved to achieve 270c/kg and local trade cows remained firm which was a reflection on the quality offered.

Queensland Rural partner Jacko Shephard said the market was holding well through the local and southern fatteners and local processors.

“The prices are holding well especially for paddock buyers. The paddock buyers looking to fatten cattle have been helped with the rain,” he said.

“The market is suiting buyers and sellers at the moment.

“Buyers will need more rain to keep fattening the cattle because if it stops they will be in trouble.”

Steers suitable for the local trade market fell 10 cents with limited numbers while bullocks suitable for slaughter were again in short supply and sold for 197 c/kg.

Heavy cows lost 20 cents on last week’s quotes to realise 201 c/kg. Young store bulls maintained value with strong competition but quality types were in short supply.

Local trade cows remained firm while store steers and heifers gained ground.
