WHILE the race that stops the nation gives some people a chance to frock up and place a few bets, the average Cairns punter must still head to work.
But that is no reason not to celebrate in full force in the office.
MiHaven property sales and marketing manager Elaine Dean said her team would be popping some champagne to celebrate the day.
“Two of our co-workers are from Melbourne, so for them it’s a big deal,” she said.
“We will stop for the race though and have a meal together and have a sweep.
“We all remember stopping for the Melbourne Cup in school, and even if you don’t have a bet normally, everyone bets on the Melbourne Cup.”
Paramedic Nathan Cutler said professions like his didn’t allow for everybody to stop and watch the race, but he Stay up to date with rolling coverage of Cup Day at didn’t mind if other people did.
“It’s not a big deal that workers take a few minutes out of their day to watch the Melbourne Cup,” he said.
“It’s not a big deal if I have to wait a couple of extra minutes for a coffee or lunch. “
Cairns Jockey Club general manager John Cameron said it was a day that brought the region together, no matter where they were.
“We’ve had record ticket sales to our events this year. Melbourne Cup is one of those events that everyone wants to be a part of,” he said.
