QUEENSLAND ELECTION Project list to win over Hill voters

CASSOWARY Coast Regional Council has handed Hill candidates a 30-page wishlist of short- and long-term projects they want the state to back to ensure economic prosperity for the region.

Division 3 representative Councillor Wayne Kimberley said the Tully Millstream project to bring hydro power to the region, an upgrade of Tully Showgrounds and a revamp of Cardston village, which is set to host the International Rafting Federation’s 2019 World Rafting Championships, were some of the biggest items on the list.

“We also want to create a transport intermodal hub with the Mourilyan Harbour, Bruce Highway, and the railway,” Cr Kimberley said. “That’s a major project and we’re hoping to capitalise on freight, make use of Mourilyan Harbour and the B-double routes.

“We want to have a central point where we can have a transport hub but it’s a longterm project.”

Cr Kimberley said from a personal point of view he hoped whoever won this month’s election would make a “serious effort” to reduce electricity prices and state debt.

The Mission Beach Community Association is set to host a forum with all five Hill candidates on November 16.

Katter Australia Party’s Shane Knuth, LNP candidate Mario Quagliata, ALP’s Diana O’Brien, Queensland Greens’ Johanna Kloot and independent Stewart Worth have all committed to the event.

MBCA community liaison officer Truus BiddlecombeSanders said the forum would be a rare chance for residents to raise questions.

“The Mission Beach area is forgotten a lot. The big shots don’t care unless it’s about the Reef,” she said. “I think though it is really between the Katter party and the LNP here

“We are expecting a big turnout. A lot of people just come and don’t have questions, but it’s important we give the candidates the chance to answer questions.”
