Gibbs girls switch on to battery recycling

- DANAELLA WIVELL

BAILEY and Bonnie Gibbs are part of the new generation of Cairns residents that knows recycling is essential, especially during Recycling Week.

Grandmother Bev Gibbs said the four- and two-year-old Redlynch sisters practised recycling in their own home every day.

“Their mother is a teacher and she does a wonderful job teaching these two about recycling,” Mrs Gibbs said.

“They recycle everything made of plastic at home and newspapers too.”

Mayor Bob Manning said Cairns was already doing its part by almost recycling a tonne of batteries, but more people needed education.

“Batteries do have plenty of reusable components that are suitable for recycling,” he said. “While they can’t be put in your yellow-lid bin due to the hazardous materials involved, they can be dropped off for free at our waste transfer stations or in Cairns library branches.”
