Socking it to poverty

By Matthew Pitts, Year 5, Our Lady Help of Christians

TAFE Queensland Cairns campus Gatton Street, Manunda, Cairns Session 1 9.00am – 10.00am Session 2 More information sessions are scheduled. 5.30pm – 6.30pm ON OCTOBER 16, Our Lady Help of Christians celebrated Rice Day alongside Colourful Socks Day.

On this day, OLHOC students and teachers had one cup of rice at big lunch and wore colourful socks, but they had to bring a gold coin donation.

This was to raise money for Mercy Works Sock it to Poverty Day.

Mercy Works gave all the money that was raised to people in Papua New Guinea as part of the Socktober month. OLHOC participates in this day every year.

Instead of bringing a lunch box with a nutritious meal inside, everyone has a big breakfast and the tuck shop provides them with one cup of rice at lunch time to loosen hunger’s grip on them.

Some students complained about the lack of food, showing they are starting to feel the same way the kids that are living in poverty feel.

Imagine that is how you lived. Starving, in need of education, no proper medical treatment and living in fear of death daily.

We should all start to appreciate what we have.
