Sharks take care of business

By Jack Bowe, Year 4, Holy Cross School Plenty of food for legal eagles

- Emma Keating, Year 12, Gordonvale State High School

RECENTLY all the Year 4 students at Holy Cross School attended the Year 5 Shark Tank and listened to some advertising pitches for the Year 5 Christmas markets which will be held in late November.

There were 17 pitches altogether – six in 5C, six in 5H Henry, Gina Robb, Katrina Riedal and Jacinta Roberts.

The sharks had to bid for the right to invest in the companies.

The highest bidder was Brad Henry who invested $55 in one company.

Some of the products that will be for sale were tornado bottles, Christmas trees that are made out of recycled magazines, teddy bears, bath bombs and snowmen sock toys.

We had such a good time listening to the Year 5 presentations.

I look forward to being in Year 5 next year. EACH year the Business Liaison Association holds the Breakfast with the Law event.

This event allows students to listen to motivating speakers from the legal profession and to interact with other legal studies students from the Cairns area, while enjoying a sit-down breakfast at a local Cairns hotel.

The topic for this year’s breakfast was social media and the law. This area of law is extremely relevant to students in the new age of technology.

Throughout the morning students were inspired and challenged by guest speakers Charlotte Campbell, president of Queensland Young Lawyers and Professor Anthony Gray.

Ms Campbell’s speech educated students on the consequences social media can have on their lives and careers and how it can negatively impact a case.

Professor Gray challenged students by presenting a case study and allowing students and teachers to voice their opinions on the verdict.

The breakfast overall was an enjoyable experience.

The guest speakers inspired and challenged students and encouraged them to pursue a career in the legal industry.
