Sailor rescued

A NORWEGIAN sailor has been treated at a Thursday Island medical centre after his yacht demasted and lost most of its rigging. The 70-year-old managed to activate an emergency beacon which was received in Holland where his vessel was registered and local authorities were notified. Thursday Island Water Police located the stricken boat at Hocking Shoals, about 75km west of Thursday Island just before 7am. The mariner was taken on board Police Vessel Brett Handran and transported back to Thursday Island for medical assessment.
