RSL barbecue fest

THE Cooktown RSL Sub Branch will host a free community barbecue and fun fair on Saturday. The alcohol-free event is for all ages and will be held at Anzac Park from 12pm. There will be a spit roast, mechanical bull, magic show, face painting, balloon artists, laser tag, bouncy castle, military display and the 51st FNQ Regiment. Contact the sub branch on 0488 092 415.

Season’s celebratio­n

LAKELAND is throwing a Christmas celebratio­n for the whole family on December 9 at the Lakeland Coffee Shop grounds. The afternoon starts with Christmas markets from 3pm, food and refreshmen­ts from 5.30pm and Christmas carols from 6.30pm. Everybody is welcome. Light up the night

ENTRIES are open for the 2017 Light Up Cook Shire Christmas light competitio­n. Entry is free and open to all residents, businesses and community organisati­ons in Cook Shire. Entrants will be judged according to artistic, visual and creative elements and there are fantastic prizes. Entries close December 11, with judging on December 15. Indigenous talent

THE Apunipima Australian indigenous Basketball All Stars have announced a 15-man squad to challenge the New Zealand Maori National Team in the 4th Annual Trans-Tasman Basketball Clash in Cairns next month. The team will be out to secure its third consecutiv­e trans-Tasman title. Head coach Joel Khalu said on paper, this could quite possibly be the most talented line-up we’ve ever had going into a trans-Tasman series. Games will be held from December 5-7 at 289 Aumuller St, Manunda.
