College upgrade

MOUNT St Bernard College in Herberton is set to benefit from the refurbishm­ent of general learning areas and student amenities thanks to a funding boost of more than $300,000 from the Federal Coalition Government. Northern-based Government Senator Ian Macdonald said the College would receive $326,123 through the Capital Grants Program for the refurbishm­ent works. The funding announceme­nt comes after Senator Macdonald officially opened more than $5 million in new facilities at the college, last year.

Public nuisance

POLICE have charged a Manunda man after several incidents in Mareeba on Sunday afternoon. It will be alleged the 36-year-old man attended an address on Walsh Street about 4pm and threatened a resident before confrontin­g a woman on Robin Street about 5pm and making threats towards her as well. The man will appear in the Mareeba Magistrate­s Court on December 18 charged with one count of common assault and contravene direction and two counts each of public nuisance and assault or obstruct police.

Range roadworks

ROADWORKS near Streets Creek on the Kuranda Range are expected to cause some delays until Thursday. A one lane closure is in place under traffic control and will operate 24 hours a day. The works include curve widening, asphalt resurfacin­g and new safety barriers being installed. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and observe reduced speed restrictio­ns in the area.

Students awarded

CAIRNS West State School student Rory Stewart has won a $150 Cairns Penny account after winning Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch’s 2017 Christmas Card Competitio­n. The eight-year-old’s drawing of Santa on the Reef impressed Mr Entsch and his staff. Second place went to Jade Harmer from Edge Hill State School and third place went to Weilarni Darua from Tagai State College, Horn Island Campus. The girls received a $100 and a $50 Cairns Penny account, respective­ly.

Man on new charge

A 63-YEAR-OLD Whitfield man who was charged last week for cheating at a Cairns Casino has been charged with another similar offence. He is expected to appear in the Cairns Magistrate­s Court on December 12.
