BORN TO EXPLORE
TULLY MOURNS DIVER:
A YOUNG spearfisherman who died after suffering a suspected shallow-water blackout while diving off Hinchinbrook Island was an adventurer who earned a living exploring the great outdoors.
Shane Ronan, 24, who grew up in Tully, was found unconscious on the sea floor while taking part in the Liam Nissen Memorial event at Otter Reef on Saturday morning.
The event is held annually in tribute to a Mission Beach teenager who died several years ago.
Mr Ronan was free diving with his father at the time of the incident.
He was rushed by emergency services to Cairns Hospital, however died in the hospital yesterday morning.
Mr Ronan and his partner operated Cockatours, a Tullybased bus tour agency that travels extensively across the Far North, including to the northernmost tip of Australia.
“Together, we are working towards creating a lifestyle we will enjoy, involving the things we love most: outdoor activities and exploration,” the young couple’s website reads.
“We believe Australia is a beautiful country and there is much to explore.”
Cassowary Coast police Inspector Steve Kersley said the water police were investigating and a report would be prepared for the Coroner.
“It’s a terrible tragedy and another to hit a small community of the Cassowary Coast,” he said.
“Divers need to be aware of the dangers and always dive with a buddy.”
