Green applies Ivy League lessons to rugby league

- PETER BADEL

RUGBY LEAGUE COWBOYS coach Paul Green has turned to the American university that schooled US presidents Barack Obama and George Bush in a bid to deliver North Queensland’s second premiership.

The premiership-winning mentor will begin study at world-famous Harvard this Sunday as part of his mission to make the Cowboys the NRL’s true powerhouse.

For six days, Green will undertake a certificate of management excellence at Harvard Business School.

He will live on campus and rub shoulders with hundreds of America’s brightest executives and business leaders.

As part of his fact-finding educational trip, Green will also visit NFL and NBA clubs to ensure the Cowboys find an extra edge following the heartbreak of last season’s grandfinal loss to the Storm.

He has forged cross-code ties with North Melbourne’s AFL coach Brad Scott, whose own trip to Harvard a few years ago planted the seed for the Cowboys mentor.

“Brad Scott has actually been to Harvard and he highly recommended it, so I thought I’d give it a go,” Green said.

“I like the fact that the course is from outside the NRL industry. It’s designed for executive-level people from basically any industry; it’s learning about leadership.

“Hopefully it will make me a better coach, a better leader and hopefully that helps the Cowboys.”
