Fulton’s terrific 12 leads Barron win

- JACOB GRAMS jacob.grams@news.com.au

THEY kept missing, Fulton kept hitting.

That’s how the Barron captain saw it as he finished with the sublime match figures of 12-53 in his side’s win over United on Saturday.

The humble right-arm paceman, who put it all down to the tricks of the up-anddown Griffiths Park pitch, said everyone played their part in the second win over United for the season.

“The ball on the pitch was doing a bit, so that helped out … all the boys fielded well, held their catches,” Fulton said. “I just tried to hit the stumps really.

“I think Harry Gardner actually bowled better. He Jordan bowled really well. Every ball was hitting the stumps, making them play.

“I just stole all the wickets at the other end.”

After four wickets on the first day, Fulton added three more to his haul for 7-24 to dismiss United for 97 and earn first innings points.

But the game was far from over when the home side bounced back to topple Barron for 103.

United took a “nothing to lose” approach to the chase of 123 from 13 overs, but Fulton stepped up again with 5-29 including the big wickets of Mick Raso and Linden March to keep the smiles on the faces of his team.

“They were coming pretty hard at us, had a couple caught on the boundary. I just tried to put the ball where they couldn’t hit it for six,” he said.

Fulton said it was great to see Barron players upbeat going into the mid-season break, but warned them not to be content with the result.

“They were ecstatic. They knew all the hard work they put in at training at the beginning of the year was paying off,” he said.

Fulton and Mulgrave legspinner Daniel Kendrick, who took 12-84 against United in 2015-16, are the only two players to take 12 wickets in a first grade match in the past decade.

United captain Cam Davis said it was tough to get in on the two-paced wicket, which favoured all bowlers, but paid full credit to Fulton.

“I think he just put it in the right areas for the pitch, probably changed his pace up a bit and I think he was the hardest guy to hit,” he said.

“I think he just bowled full and straight and we sort of just had to go after them.

“From our side and theirs, there was some pretty good bowling there.”

While disappointed with the loss, Davis said his side did well to get in a position to win the game, although rued the dropped catches that ultimately cost them.
