Hoges’ repulsed by sleazy industry ‘creeps’

- ALISON STEPHENSON

ONE of Australia’s most iconic actors says he is “staggered” at the repulsive behaviour of some men in entertainment – and fears for his granddaughter who works in the industry.

Paul Hogan said that he was appalled at the sleazy nature of Hollywood and was delighted that people were finally getting their comeuppance.

“It’s great that it’s come out,” he said of the #metoo movement, which has exposed huge names such as movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, US TV host Matt Lauer and comedian Louis CK.

“There’s so many people being exposed that you never expected,” he said.

However, the 78-year-old said there was one person he was not surprised was outed.

“I was staggered at the creepiness of people in Hollywood,” Hogan said.

“I knew Harvey Weinstein was a grub … No one was shocked about Harvey.”

His granddaughter Mylee is a reporter for Channel 7 and Hogan, in Australia to promote his role with Cure Cancer Australia, said he would take matters into his own hands if anyone dared harass her.

“I have four attractive granddaughters, one of them is on Channel 7, and if I find out someone out there is hassling her, I’d go out and kick their arse … they shouldn't have to put up with that,” he said.

The comic also said he was steering clear of making any jokes about the subject, as Russell Crowe infamously did at the AACTAs in a poorly received quip about his Romper Stomper co-star Jacqui McKenzie. “It’s very hard … to do comedy on it because if you do make light of it, you’re disrespecting the girls who put their hand up and said, ‘This prick did this to me’,” Hogan said.
