Palin son arrested ANCHORAGE: The eldest son of former Republican vicepresidential nominee Sarah Palin is in jail facing assault and burglary charges in her home state of Alaska. Track Palin, 28, appeared in state court in Palmer, Alaska, yesterday on a felony burglary charge and misdemeanour assault and criminal mischief charges, court records showed. TEGUCIGALPA: President Juan Orlando Hernandez has been declared the winner of Honduras’ disputed election after three weeks of uncertainty and unrest in which at least 17 people died in protests amid the opposition’s allegations of vote fraud. According to the court’s official count, Mr Hernandez won with 42.95 per cent to 41.42 for runner-up Salvador Nasralla, who well before the announcement had challenged the result and said he would not recognise it. There was no immediate public comment by Mr Hernandez, whose sister Hilda Hernandez, a cabinet minister, died on Sunday in a helicopter crash.
Deadly mudslide
SANTIAGO: The death toll from a mudslide that hit the town of Villa Santa Lucia in Chile’s Patagonia region has climbed to 11, while 15 others are reported missing, the country’s National Office for Emergency says. According to authorities, the affected area is buried by at least 3m of mud. “About 20 houses were dragged to some 200m away by the landslide”, which was caused by heavy rain on Saturday, a local told the media. According to the Chilean Meteorological Office, the affected town received more than 120mm of rain in less than six hours.

LIBREVILLE: A man has stabbed two Danish journalists in Gabon’s capital, declaring it was in retaliation for US attacks against Muslims. Gabon’s Defence Minister said one journalist was seriously injured in the attack at an artisanal market, a site popular with tourists. It is the first of its kind in this West African country where Muslims and Christians coexist peacefully.
Child dismembered
HONG KONG: A Hong Kong woman has been arrested for murdering and dismembering her 12-year-old daughter. The 37-year-old was arrested at home on Sunday night following reports of a dispute. Police found “sections of a human body” inside the bathroom following a search, according to a police statement. The family was living together in a 5.5sq m flat in Mong Kok, according to the South China Morning Post.
