Shambolic VAR can’t be ignored
I KNOW we have well and truly covered the VAR in this column but it really has become the gift that just keeps giving. And not in a good way.
The outrage it has caused among fans, coaches and players surely cannot be ignored anymore.
The stop-start nature it brings doesn’t lend itself to what the league is trying to create, which is an exciting, fluent, fast competition that will attract new fans to the beautiful game.
Couple this with some strange referee interpretations when using the VAR, and this season is shaping to become a complete farce if the FFA continues to ignore the voices that matter.
■ I know there are millions of Star Wars aficionados around the world and I myself appreciate a good sci-fi film, but I’m still puzzled as to what the recent promotion had to do with football or the A-league.
Figures released recently show that crowds through the turnstiles and audience viewers have dropped, giving a sense of stagnation in the league.
What is needed is promotion of the passion within this game, fans singing and chanting for their beloved clubs creating an atmosphere that brings people back.
The FFA and their promotional department need to have a good look at themselves.
■ While we are on themed rounds, there is also the Spanish round that deserves a discussion. While it’s all well and good to pay homage to an amazing footballing nation like Spain and have some of the outstanding imports now playing in the comp, it’s also important to remember the past.
The glory days of the old NSL were built on many different nationalities who laid the foundations for what the game in this country is now. All are deserving of a special mention.
