HOOP’S ROCKY TREK
WANDERSON D’Avila is the leading jockey in the Far North and Rockhampton trainer Tom Button says the hoop is well regarded in Central Queensland too.
The Brazilian hoop, who rode a winner for trainer Jeffrey O’Dea in Townsville on Saturday, takes a full book of rides at Rockhampton Jockey Club this afternoon.
Button, a Rockhamptonbased trainer and one-time Brisbane premiership winning jockey, has booked the Tablelands-based jockey to ride Aussie Tycoon today.
“Wanderson is one of the few jockeys around that can ride the weight of 52.5kgs,” Button said. “He gets in very good weight wise.
“Wanderson seems to have no issues getting a ride, wherever he goes he gets good rides.
“He can ride the minimum weight, he rides winners, so people want to put him on.”
Button will start Aussie Tycoon and stablemate Deconstructed in the Class 6 Plate (1400m) today and in the small field, believes he has two winning chances.
“Deconstructed has a fair bit of ability and was just beaten in the Rockhampton Cup,” Button said.
“He is a good enough horse to win a fair few races around Rockhampton out of carnival time.”
D’Avila also takes two rides for leading Mackay trainer John Manzelmann today.
Racing in North Queensland turns to Townsville on Thursday before Mackay is one of just three race meetings this Saturday.
