Tourism hub stall delayed
A COMMUNITY consultation pop-up stall giving residents the opportunity to have their say on a proposed $1 billion waterfront tourism development in Cairns has been pushed back to open in mid-January.
But Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones yesterday opened online public consultation where business and community members can learn more about the new Global Tourism Hub and provide feedback.
“It just makes sense that the first Global Tourism Hub should be happening here in Cairns,” Ms Jones said.
“We’ve highlighted that the port land is where we would like to see it happen, but also we made it very clear in the consultation that we think we could sustain a Global Tourism Hub anywhere within a 60-70km radius of Cairns.
“We’ve seen how transformational Queens Warf will be to Brisbane and we want to see significant investment in a new Global Tourism Hub so when people come to Cairns they get a world-class experience.”
Ms Jones said, while the major development had plans to include a second casino for the city, the existing Cairns casino operator would have the opportunity to lodge an expression of interest if there were plans to expand operations or invest in new products and experiences.
Member for Cairns Michael Healy said he would like to see something which complemented the region’s natural existing assets and enhanced the holiday-maker experience.
A pop-up stall will be at Cairns Central from January 15-28.
