Big day for country jock

SPORT IN DETAIL

- JORDAN GERRANS

Jockey Frank Edwards’ love of country racing was only affirmed on Tuesday when he piloted home his fifth Mareeba Cup winner in Jordan. “I am always at Mareeba, Atherton and Innisfail, even though I have moved from Cairns down to Townsville,” he said. “Mareeba and Atherton would have to be two of my favourite tracks.” Mareeba Turf Club secretary John Thurlow was happy with a huge crowd of at least 2000.

HORSE RACING EXPERIENCED jockey Frank Edwards has been good to country racetracks around North Queensland and in turn, country cups have been very good to him.

The 54-year-old bagged his fifth Mareeba Cup on Tuesday, lifting Stephen Potiris-trained Jordan in the final stages of the $10,000 Benchmark 55 Handicap (1500m) Cup.

Jordan, an eight-year-old gelding, had not won since
