Cool change coming with rain on the way

RESIDENTS across the region are expected to be gifted with some long-awaited wet weather to kick off the New Year, following a warm start to summer in Far North Queensland.

Bureau of Meteorolog­y duty forecaster Janine Yuasa said showers were forecast across the region from tomorrow.

“Tuesday will be seeing an increase in the chance of showers and inland areas like the Tablelands could see isolated thundersto­rms as well,” she said.

“While Wednesday is more likely for rain, it’ll be reasonably showery from Tuesday onwards into the later part of the next week.”

Although some wet weath- er is predicted, Cairns is set to reach a maximum of 35 degrees today and tomorrow before dropping to 34 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday.

In Mareeba, a top of 36 degrees is forecast for today before dropping to 35 and 33 degrees throughout the week.

Cooktown is also expected to hit a top of 35 degrees today before hitting a high of 36 degrees tomorrow.

The Bureau of Meteorolog­y’s climate outlook for January to March also shows that Babinda is expected to get the most rainfall in the Far North in the New Year, with an average of 2017mm expected to fall.

Innisfail is expected to get an average of 1887mm of rain in the same period, and more than 1500mm is predicted for Wonga and the Cape Tribulatio­n region.

An average of 1177mm is forecast for Cairns, up to 700mm for Mareeba and an average of 859mm at Upper Barron.
