TIME TO HIT THE GREAT FAR NORTH’S FRESH AIR WITH THESE TOP SPOTS TO ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO STAY FIT

-

NOT everyone is a Steve ‘Commando’ Willis or Michelle Bridges. The duo are undoubtedly among the fittest in the country. However, staying in shape is about more than good health for them, it’s their livelihoods. They are a great example and a reminder that staying active needs to be a priority. With that in mind, here are the top 10 best spots in Cairns to get out and about with the kids.

1. THE ESPLANADE

Go for a swim in the Lagoon then build sandcastles, ride bikes or scooters on the Esplanade, play at the Pirate Ship, the Treehouse or Muddy’s. Parents can throw on workout clothes and do pushups, squats and sprints. Bring a frisbee or kick a soccer ball around. Cairns Regional Council hosts a range of free exercise programs. Visit www.cairns.qld.gov.au/esplanade/whats-on/active-living.

2. GOOMBOORA PARK

Similar to the Esplanade, there are opportunities for all forms of fitness and fun at Goomboora Park, from swimming to hitting the extensive paths for a run or on the bike. The wide open grassed areas are perfect for kite flying or kicking a soccer ball.

3. THE BEACHES

Whether you are hitting Kewarra, Yorkeys, Machans, Clifton, Ellis, Trinity or Palm Cove, Cairns has arguably the most beautiful beaches in the world. Go swimming in the stinger nets, build sandcastles, explore the rocks, play beach cricket or soccer.

4. WALSHS PYRAMID

This 922m tall mountain would be better suited to older kids. Get started very early in conquering the mountain to beat the heat and pack lots of water. Find it south past Gordonvale and turn into Moss Rd.

5. THE RED, BLUE, GREEN & YELLOW ARROW

The arrow tracks (pictured) are a fun form of fitness for the whole family. Make a game of your journey and spot the rainforest creatures. Collins Ave, Edge Hill.

A cool outing. Hike up to a series of swimming holes. Via Redlynch Intake Rd.

7. BOTANIC GARDENS

There is so much to discover in this garden paradise. Explore and then stop at the cafe. Collins Ave, Edge Hill.

8. SUGARWORLD

A great water playground for kids of any age. Set aside a whole day at the Edmonton water park.

9. MANGROVE BOARDWALK

Pack the mozzie spray for an adventure through the mangroves at Airport Ave on the way to Cairns Airport. About a 30-40minute trip.

10. GLACIER ROCK

Put aside a few hours for this gentle trek. The pay-off is spectacular views. Off Stoney Creek Rd, Rainforest Estate.
