Brit of nous is the secret to a good cuppa

- ALICIA NALLY

COFFEE lovers and relative newcomers to the Far North, Sharon and Chris Murphy, are breathing new life into a favourite Redlynch business.

The couple, who moved to Cairns from Cornwall in the UK more than three years ago, took over The Corner Store on Michaelangelo in September.

The couple were enjoying significant growth in their mobile coffee business, The Coffee Can Cafe, and were faced with a decision to either buy a second coffee van or invest in a cafe.

A kitchen renovation has just been completed and The Corner Store on Michaelangelo was granted a food licence last week, allowing the Murphys to make cakes, slices and sandwiches on site.

Mrs Murphy said plans for the shop were “slowly evolving”.

“It was a corner store and we still have Brumby’s bread and Mungalli milk and do milkshakes and lollies, but coffee is our background and we just wanted somewhere permanent,” she said.

“We’re the only ones open at 6.30am and it’s picking up slowly.

“During school times we are very busy, especially with the 3pm rush.”

Mrs Murphy said Australians’ love of coffee had provided them a perfect career.

The Corner Store on Michaelangelo is open 6.30am-5.30pm every day except Sunday, when hours are 7am -1pm.
