Council meeting

THE January meeting of Cook Shire Council will now be held on Monday, January 22, and Tuesday, January 23, at the council chambers at 10 Furneaux St. The public is invited to attend.

Dive over obstacles

MAKE the most of your school holidays and head to the Cooktown Pool every Tuesday and Thursday until January 18 for the inflatable obstacle course. Open from 1pm to 4pm, the obstacle course is for children aged from five to 15. For more details, phone 4069 6928.

Visit Normanton

EXPLORE the Far North region with a trip to Normanton. The town is described as the “Barramundi Capital of the North” with locals regularly catching fish in excess of 5kg. Normanton is at the head of the Norman River, 700km west of Cairns. Visitors can take a scenic cruise or try their hand at fishing with a local Savannah guide. Another popular activity is to visit the railway station and take a ride on the Gulflander. Historical buildings include the Purple Pub, the Albion Hotel, the original Burns Philp building and the Bank of New South Wales, which is now a listed National Trust building.
