Court told accused used stick in attack

- GRACE MASON

A MAN on bail for allegedly breaking his ex-partner’s arm twice in two months has been remanded in custody for allegedly doing the same thing to his new girlfriend.

Peret Jacky Arkwookerum allegedly swung a walking stick at his current partner’s head three times during an argument at a Pormpuraaw residence on Tuesday.

The Cairns Magistrates Court heard she put her arm up to shield herself and it was fractured so badly she is in Cairns Hospital undergoing surgery.

Police prosecutor Sen-Constable Trevor Woodman said he had twice been granted bail before after allegedly breaking his previous girlfriend’s arm in May and August last year.

He said in the first case he allegedly hit her twice with a broom, then seven weeks later he allegedly threw her to the ground and kicked her twice in the head with the force of the fall causing her healing arm to break again.

He is now facing three charges of grievous bodily harm.

“He broke the same person’s arm twice,” Sen-Constable Woodman said.

“It seems that although he’s been given an opportunity by the court his behaviour is not ceasing.

“In my submission it’s just an escalating pattern.”

Defence solicitor Steve Carter said all three alleged incidents occurred after he had been drinking.

Magistrate Nerida Wilson ruled he was an unacceptable risk of reoffending and a danger to the victims when denying bail.

The case was adjourned to February 12.
